Tanning and Natural Sunscreen

At Danu World, we strongly encourage you to stay safe in the sun. Exposure to harmful radiation and tanning beds can cause skin cancer. We know that skin cancer is on the increase and the best way to protect your skin from UV rays and harmful free radicals is to use a sunscreen lotion. When tanning, you need to protect yourself from the UVA and UVB rays. They stand for UltraViolet Aging and UltraViolet Burning. Think about them in those terms and it really hits home as to what they actually do to your skin.

Natural and Organic Sunscreen at Danu World

Take care to check your sun lotion to ensure that you are covered for both UVA and UVB exposure. Not all sunscreen is broad spectrum to cover both. Your sunscreen has a shelf life. Once opened, most sunscreen will start to degrade and the sunscreen lotion SPF will decrease in time. It isn’t suitable to use products from last year as you risk burning. Use them up at the end of your holiday as a body moisturiser.

You must also ensure that you are giving your skin the correct coverage. It is easy to skimp on your sunscreen and think you have covered your exposed skin when you haven’t. The correct amount is one teaspoon to cover the face and neck and this must be reapplied every two hours. Six tablespoons for an entire adult body is the recommended amount. This works out at approximately half a teaspoon to each arm, one teaspoon per leg and the rest over your chest, shoulders and back. If your natural suncream isn’t water resistant then it must be reapplied each time you come out of the pool or sea.

We understand your concerns about dangerous chemicals in sunscreen, this is why we have chosen natural sunscreen ranges. You want water resistant where possible without polluting our oceans. You asked for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that will act like skin care and treat your skin whilst protecting from the sun. Safe sunscreen is important to you and the ingredients matter. They matter to us too.

We have researched the best certified organic sunscreen and have found EQ EVOA. This natural sunscreen brand is full of organic ingredients, water resistant and kind to sensitive skin. It is a broad spectrum sunscreen lotion and is the first certified non-ecotoxic sunscreen on the market. Safe to our marine life and oceans. Available in both sunscreen SPF 30 and SPF 50. Silicone free and packed full of organic shea butter, these organic sun cream ingredients will make for a safer tanning cream than the chemical filled ones that you may have used in the past.

This range is perfect for the whole family. You don’t need to have a bottle for each family member with different SPF. SPF 30 is a good all-rounder. Titanium dioxide is the ingredient that acts as a sunscreen. Titanium dioxide sits on the skin and acts as a barrier to the UVB and UVA rays. It doesn't penetrate the skin.

What is an SPF?

SPF stands for sun protection factor. Sunscreen SPF ratings are a formula for determining how long you can stay safely in the sun without burning. If you burn after 15 minutes in the sun without sun protection, then using an SPF 20 means you can stay safely in the sun for 20x15mins = 300 minutes in the sun without burning. It is recommended to use a higher sun protection factor than you think you will need. Most people do not use the correct amount of sunscreen and don’t reapply often enough. This means that their factor 20 often equates to a factor 10. You can still tan using a high protection sunscreen so don’t worry that you won’t come back from holiday without a tan (if that is your aim).

Baby sunscreen should have sunscreen SPF levels of at least 30. Babies should be kept out of the sun where possible and covered in loose-fitting clothing to lessen the risk of sun exposure. Choose an organic sunscreen to protect your baby and you won't need to worry about bad sunscreen chemicals on that delicate skin.

EQ EVOA has an SPF 50 non-toxic sunscreen stick. A physical sunscreen for the face, this natural sunscreen gives the ultimate in sun protection and can be used as an SPF lip balm too. Your lips can burn quickly in the sun and UV exposure can reactivate the cold sore virus. Harmful radiation rays still penetrate clouds and damage your skin. We recommend the use of a daily SPF moisturiser. It’s easy to get caught out without sun protection when you don’t think you will be outside for long enough to be exposed. Perhaps you don’t wish to use a specific sun cream throughout the year. A daily moisturiser with SPF will have you covered. Kimberly Sayer SPF 30 is a matte finish formulation. It is available as a lightweight lotion or as the antioxidant daily moisturising cream.

This is a shocking fact - 2 minutes of casual sun a day at the end of one year = 2 full weeks of sunbathing! Those UV rays can quickly mount up.

We also stock a natural organic mineral sunscreen from UK brand Essentially Nature. This is a mineral physical sunscreen. This means it contains active mineral ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin. Full of antioxidants and free from chemicals, this sunscreen is a non-greasy powdered mineral cream. Fragrance-free, and packed with essential fatty acids, omega 3 6 and 9. A sunscreen that not only protects your skin from the sun but also treats it and repairs damaged skin. This is a workhorse of a lotion.

Our sun care creams are cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

Now that you know how to stay safe in the sun, what about how to get a tan out of the sun? Sunless tanning has been around for many years and we have all heard of the disaster stories or maybe had them for ourselves. Well not anymore. Sunless tanning has come a long way. Who would have thought you would be able to buy a natural fake tan, you can! Self-tanning prevents premature ageing that sun exposure can bring. There is no reason to bake yourself brown when you can fake it instead.

Eco by Sonya has brought us a superb award-winning combination of tanning products. All formulated for Sonya’s sister, a skin cancer survivor, they are organic tanning products packed with shea butter, coconut oil, aloe vera, and essential oils. The Invisible tanning lotion is excellent. Moisturising on a dry skin, it glides on and sinks in effortlessly. You develop a rich natural sun tan appearance within hours. There is no guide colour to this self-tanning cream. It dries quickly allowing you to dress immediately after application. There is also a tanning moisturiser that works over several applications to lightly enhance your own skin tone and give you a gradual natural glow. With the Winter skin gradual tanner, you can control how deep you want your colour to be. It is a forgiving formulation and you can develop a golden streak-free tan over several days of use.

The firming mousse sunless tanner is like being in St Tropez for a week. This dark tanning lotion is clever. It has a guide colour to enable you to see where you have put it and it leaves a subtle instant tan. The DHA (active ingredient) reacts with your skin and you will get a golden glow after the first hour. Wash it off to reveal that golden glow or leave it on for the DHA to have a stronger effect and give you that St Tropez colour! Please make sure to wash your hands after application or you will find that your hands will stain with the tanning solution. Our Eco by Sonya range gives you effortless bronze from tanning lotion that is certified organic, natural and kind to your sensitive skin.
