Hair Removal

Do you dare to bare?
Unwanted hair is something so many of us struggle with. Hair removal isn't always easy to keep on top of and can be painful if we don't use the right products. There are many different methods and some are suited to certain types of hair only. For DIY removal at home, we need products that are easy to use and that we can safely do ourselves.
We will talk you through the various methods and help you avoid the pitfalls of at home hair removal.

Hair Removal Essentials at Danu World

Shaving is the quickest and cheapest option for most of us. It can be disastrous though and ingrown hairs can plague you if you haven't got your technique right. You will see regrowth within hours sometimes and certainly by the following day. It is a DIY method that we have done at one stage or another. Shaving oil and Shaving gels make for a more comfortable and close shave.

When men are having a wet shave, they will often use a shaving oil to soften the bristles and condition their skin. The oil reduces the chance of the blade dragging the skin as it provides the perfect lubricated surface for the razor to glide effortlessly over the skin.

The art of shaving has almost been lost due to the popularity of disposable and electric razors.

We can help you find a more green way to achieve a smooth shave without filling a landfill with plastic and polluting the oceans with plastic microbeads.

Wet Shaving

For wet shaving, the best way of preventing razor burn is to prepare the skin correctly pre-shave. Use a shave cream or natural shaving soap. The idea is to not disrupt the skins natural oils by using a harsh soap or foam.

Ensure your natural shaving soap has organic ingredients such as grapeseed oil, castor oil, olive oil and essential oils to preserve the natural oils on the face. For the best close shave, a good quality shaving brush will lift the hairs and give the beard a gentle clean. Well lubricated skin makes for a more comfortable shave. Use a safety razor to glide through the shaving cream. (Metal safety razors are a good long-term investment. You can change the blades and keep the handle. Reducing waste and reusing products is part of our core values here at Danu World and we are happy to make suggestions to help you achieve this.)

Start in the direction of the hair growth to prevent razor bumps. For a very close shave, once the initial hair has been removed, it is advised to apply more shaving cream and then work the razor against the hair growth.

Follow up with an after-shave balm to prevent sensitive skin.

There are also products such as creams. It works fairly quickly however it can be smelly, can cause irritation due to the chemicals involved and can be costly if you want to remove body hair as opposed to facial hair.

It is bad for polluting our waterways and oceans, therefore, isn't a viable option.

Waxing

Waxing treatments can be used anywhere on the body or face. You can get wax kits for use at home, however, we have all fallen foul of this method when we've attempted it ourselves and have had the waxing gone wrong. There is a risk of hot wax burning skin or bruising and tearing of the skin if you don't have the right texture or thickness to the wax.

Wax strips are used cold but they often don't grab the hairs and you can be left with rogue hairs after the treatment. The best wax removal is done by professional waxers in a waxing spa. There are different types of waxing available for unwanted hair in various areas. Underarm waxing, eyebrow waxing, bikini waxing, waxing for sensitive skin, they are all popular treatments but need to be performed with the right product and by a qualified person.

Waxing is not a permanent solution and needs to be redone every few weeks. It will damage the hair follicle over time which means that you will see a reduction in hair regrowth. You can aid this by using a hair reduction body lotion. We stock a natural hair reduction body lotion - Laidbare Hair today, gone tomorrow minimising serum.

Sugaring Wax

Sugar waxing is a popular treatment that can be done at home and you don't need to be proficient at removing body hair to sugar your unwanted hair. It is very gentle, the closest you will ever come to painless waxing. Sugaring wax is made up of pure food grade ingredients. Lemon juice, sugar syrup and water is a typical sugaring recipe. We love sugaring as it is safe and uses natural products. We knew of the success of the body shops famous sugaring kit over the last 25 years and we have found the company that made it for them.
Sugar Strip Ease is chemical-free and has 100% natural ingredients. It’s a specialist blend of sugar syrup and water and is so gentle it can be used on all areas of the body. This is a multi-award winning product that has stood the test of time, we simply had to bring it to you! Sugaring products are particularly kind to the bikini area. Sugaring Brazilians (the treatment, we don't actually sugar Brazilian people) surged in popularity as it is so gentle, certainly much kinder to the skin than wax removal. You can remove facial hair instantly without leaving behind the tell-tale red swollen skin. It is a popular choice for introducing teens to removing body hair. Sugaring doesn't require heating, it is best used at room temperature. It doesn't damage the hair follicle and is gentle on skin. It is really simple, apply a thin layer of the sugar paste in the direction of the hair growth and flick it up and away. Follow up with some natural skin care products.
Our customers have pronounced it the best home hair removal product ever!

Threading

Threading can be used to remove facial hair and in some cases hair on the neck. It can only be done by a trained threader. It is thought to have originated as far back as 6000 years ago. The art of threading has been part of age-old traditions and rites of passage. For example, in Persia, it was thought that eyebrow threading marked a woman’s path into adulthood. A young woman had her eyebrows threaded just before she got married to signify her new wifely status. Whilst in other parts of eastern culture, it is said that the shaped-brow marked a sign of female virility. This is an ancient art of removing body hair taught and handed down through generations of women and it is a precision technique.

Permanent hair removal

More of us are turning to permanent removal systems. The best permanent system is using a laser to destroy the follicle stopping hair growth. There are several tools to do this. Electrolysis which uses a fine needle to put an electric current into the hair, this is best used on facial hair. IPL hair removal (intense pulsed light) uses a pulsing light that has a frequency to destroy hair in the follicle. IPL machines are starting to be utilised more in the home.
IPL sessions can be expensive if you have a large area of hair to be removed. It cannot be done in one session and although several areas can be treated in the session, you need to have several appointments to ensure that the hair is totally destroyed. At-home laser systems are a considerable purchase however you can use them over and over again until you get the results that you want. At-home lasers don't harm your skin and can be very effective for permanent removal of body hair.
If you find you are suffering from ingrown hairs as a result of hair removal, you may need to consider your skin care routine. Removal of body hair, in particular, can cause ingrown hairs. They can be painful and unsightly and need to be treated before they get infected. An exfoliating glove is a useful tool in the battle against ingrown hairs. Removing dead skin cells before you start to remove hair will help to avoid the problem. Exfoliating leaves the skin in the best condition for removing hair as it will lift the hairs enabling them to be whisked away quickly. You are less likely to suffer from those painful bumps and lumps if you are using an organic body moisturiser. Keeping the skin hydrated and soft allows hairs to come through more easily rather than them curling back into the follicle. If you have pain from an infected hair follicle, you may need to see your GP for treatment.
Consider minimising your hair growth with our Laidbare minimising serum. Use after sugaring, waxing or shaving to soothe your skin or use as a treatment moisturiser between IPL sessions.
