Candles and Home Fragrance

Home fragrance can add personality and character to your surroundings. Scents can have powerful effects on our emotions, evoking memories, calming or invigorating us and creating a welcoming atmosphere in our homes. A fragrance is a great way to set the mood, freshen the air and give the desired ambience to complement your interior design.

Danuworlds home fragrance range includes natural handmade candles, herbal incense and reed diffusers as well as candle holders and oil burners. Light up your life and fill your home with gorgeous natural fragrances to create the perfect ambience for every room in your home.

Many of the scented candles come in wonderfully reusable jars that can be repurposed and enjoyed long after the candle has burned. You could even try your hand at candle making.

And we have a wide range of fair trade candle holders and tea light holders, many are made from recycled materials ranging from bicycles to driftwood, making them truly sustainable which is very important to us at Danu.

Candles and home fragrance

We have a wide range of fair trade ethical candles including scented soy wax candles handmade in the UK using pure essential oils. The Wild Olive wooden candle wicks create a crackle as they burn, reminiscent of an open fire, filling the air with the healing scents of natural essential oils. And the fact that they are natural soy wax means you will get the warm glow with none of the toxins associated with paraffin wax candles. Wild olive also makes delightful handmade soap, bath bombs and melts allowing you to create the perfect at-home spa experience.

Our Artisans Fair candles are not only Fairtrade certified, they are the only candles to use certified palm wax or palm oil. Made to the highest ethical standards they make the perfect centrepiece, a great gift and are a natural, sustainable alternative to paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances.

Whether you are looking for a signature fragrance for your own home or a gift for someone else take a little time to think about where and who you are buying for. We hope this little guide will help you choose the perfect scent.

Candles and Home Fragrance buying guide

Types of home fragrance

It’s a good idea to start by thinking about the space you want to and the type of home fragrance that will work best for you. No one wants to be overwhelmed by an overpowering scent as they walk in the door and you don’t want to burn a scent at a dinner party that clashes with the meal.

Scented Candles:

A flickering flame is a lovely way to add instant warmth and atmosphere to your living or dining room and a great way to help you relax in a soothing lavender bath. Plus, they can be a gorgeous design statement. But they could present a safety hazard in some rooms and you should never leave a lit candle unattended.

Diffusers:

A fragrance diffuser consists of fragrance oils and diffuser sticks. They deliver a constant fragrance, perfect for the bathroom or greeting you when you come home. The glass jars are beautiful and they will last up to six months. Just make sure you keep them out of the reach of pets and children.

Incense:

Burning incense is an efficient way to make large spaces smell fragrant and the incense smoke creates added atmosphere. Incense is also good for burning outside and is often used for meditation or ritual. Made from a combination of essential oils, herbs, resins and powdered wood they offer authentic and exotic fragrance to relax and unwind.

Oil Burners:

An oil burner, also known as an oil warmer or oil diffuser, allows you to choose different fragrances on different days to suit your mood. Perfect if you already have a collection of essential oils. Scented oils can be blended to your perfect combination. Choose cinnamon to evoke memories of baking apple crumble or citronella to deter bugs at summer BBQ’s.

Room Sprays:

Like a perfume for your room, they are great for adding instant freshness. The Trevano linen water in lavender and rose are made from pure distilled water and are perfect for spritzing clothes or the air and a great alternative to chemical filled air fresheners.

Candle Composition

Soy Wax

The majority of our candles are made from soybeans. Making them renewable, sustainable and vegan-friendly. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The soybean oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. Scented soy candles burn slowly and cleanly with no toxins and little or no soot. Plus, any wax spills are easy to clean using warm water and soap.

Bees Wax

Pure beeswax candles are completely natural and can help to clean indoor air. Beeswax has its own subtle scent and gives the longest burn time.

Vegetable Wax

Our Artisan Fair candles are made from Fairtrade certified palm wax. Another renewable and ethical alternative to paraffin candles.

Paraffin Wax

Paraffin is the most common form of candle wax used in commercial candle making as it’s cheap and offers excellent scent throw. However, paraffin is a petroleum waste product and has to be chemically bleached before it can be made into wax, it is not sustainable, and it is not nice! It burns very quickly and emits a black smoke, although some higher-grade ones are medical grade paraffin they are still not eco-friendly or ethical.

Choosing your scent

There are lots of ways to categorise scents but they can generally be fit into 8 categories:

  • Floral often considered more feminine scents they can be either heavy (rose) or light (jasmine and lilac)
  • Woody Earthy wood fragrances such as sandalwood, cedar and patchouli. Often considered more masculine.
  • Citrus Zesty fresh and energising including lemon, bergamot and grapefruit.
  • Fruity Sweet juicy and rich. Think rich dried fruit, fresh blackberry and fig or summer peach and raspberries.
  • Spicy Rich and exotic spicy fragrances of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, pepper and clove.
  • Sweet The scents that make you hungry like mouth-watering vanilla or delicate frangipani.
  • Fresh great for spring and summer, think freshly laundered linen.
  • Green natural, herby aromas of green tea, bay, sage and bamboo.

Scents can also be used according to the mood you are looking to create. Candles and diffusers can do more than simply fragrance a room. They can evoke memories and help our emotions.

Calming and Relaxing Scents

Think lavender and chamomile to aid sleep or Jasmine, orange blossom and rose to diffuse tension and relieve stress. Sage, vanilla and tea are also great comforting scents. Perfect when you need to unwind. Fragrances containing Ylang Ylang, patchouli and bergamot will also promote relaxation and restoration.

Uplifting Scents

Citrus and mint are refreshing and revitalising, great for a bit of morning invigoration. Rosemary is the perfect scent for enhancing concentration so it’s great for the office but also lovely in a kitchen, and cinnamon is said to sharpen brain function.

Romantic Scents

Jasmine, neroli, sandalwood and vanilla are said to increase a couple’s connection. Spices can be very seductive and candlelight itself is wonderful for creating a romantic atmosphere.

The room you are looking to fragrance will also play a part. Citrus and sage will freshen the bathroom and choose a lighter fragrance you really love for rooms where you spend a lot of time.

If you choose candles, make sure you allow them to become molten across the entire surface each time you light them to increase burn time and avoid ‘tunnelling’. It's also a good idea to trim the cotton wicks as this will further prevent sooting.

If you choose a diffuser, make sure you are using the right number of reeds. You are unlikely to need all the fragrance sticks for a small room such as a bathroom. Just add and subtract until you get the desired scent. As heat increases the diffuse rate you can pop your diffuser on a covered radiator for a quick burst of scent or refresh by turning the reeds over.
